Native American influence

The War of 1812 is typically thought of as a war between England and America, in fact it often is referred to as the second war for American independence.  forgotten in that thought is the Native peoples who occupied these lands before either party set foot on North America.

Their culture was greatly affected by the advance of the Europeans.  Trade made available things such as metal pots, cloth material, silver jewelry, and tons of other products. Some saw the trade items as great advancements and convenience for the people. While others saw the trade as a loss of the old ways.

The Prophet taught his followers to abandon the ways of the whites and to return to the old ways.  To shun alcohol and other ills presented to them by the traders. (for more info about the prophet click here.)

At the Muster on the Wabash you will have a chance to visit with some who reenact the native lifestyle.  Some may have accepted the trade goods, cooking in iron pots and camping in canvas tents, while others may select a more traditional approach.

During the Native Cultures program a glimpse at some of the traditions and ideas they held close will be discussed, demonstrated, or shown.
